Made in America

Made in the USA Resurgence: Why buying American outdoor furniture is a smart option

For several years American made could not compete with the low labor costs and product pricing that lured so many manufacturers to set up shop overseas and consumers to buy imports. An uncertain economy drove people to focus on cheaper furniture that was “good enough” without looking at the long term future, and as a result outdoor furniture manufacturers that remained true to the Red, White, and Blue struggled to hold their own in an Industry that was looking to Asia for success. A shift in global economics, however, has since seen that trend change, with sweeping momentum beginning back in 2011 when consumer reports noted that more and more homeowners interested in patio furniture were in search out the “Made in the USA” label. Manufacturers were (and still are) moving their factories back to the United States as the cost of labor in China and Indonesia increased along with cost of freight and fuel, and this process of reshoring has led many to re-evaluate the benefits of buying American.

In 2015, almost 8 in 10 American consumers say they would rather buy an American-made product than an imported one, according to a Consumer Reports survey.

People are even willing to pay up to 10% more to know that this is the case. Why do people feel this way? When it comes to furniture, what are the main benefits of buying American furniture versus imported items?

 Customization & Craftsmanship

We like to think that we are getting the best value for each dollar we spend. Don’t you spend a few extra minutes after finding that perfect dress to make sure that all the seams look tight and it does not have any spots on it? We all review the racks available in our size and make sure to get the best one available.

Unfortunately, furniture is not quite so simple. They do not have twenty of the perfect couches sitting out for you to walk around them and pick through to make sure it is flawless.

American furniture is made with quality hardwoods and put together by master craftsmen. You are not only purchasing a superior product, that will stand the test of time, but you are also purchasing an outstanding and reliable warranty.

That is why American furniture purchases are perfect when you are getting ready to make the sizable investment into an heirloom dining room set that needs to last through your grandchildren.

Don’t you deserve the options and customization available to truly make that investment of furniture customized to you and your decor?

Investing in America

Manufacturing in America to produce this furniture guarantees thousands of jobs. We all want to make sure those employment opportunities are there for our future children and grandchildren for years to come.

When we keep manufacturing products in our own country, we can make sure that the labor standards and environmental factors are followed properly. Outsourcing to other countries is all the rage, but these are sensitive and controversial subjects. Eco-friendly practices and child labor should not have any room for error!

When we invest our hard-earned money into American furniture, we are ensuring that the most current technologies are being used in conjunction with the highest craftsmanship.

Pride in American Furniture

American’s led the world in mass producing everything from automobiles to televisions, but the “deindustrialization” is continuing at a frightening pace. The only way to keep our manufacturing plants from disappearing abroad is to keep purchasing locally.

As Americans, we have great pride in our independence. Shouldn’t this same pride reflect in our purchases? Importing items that we can produce locally is contrary to our innate national honor.

Join the growing group of Americans who are making a real effort to keep the market strong.

American made furniture manufacturers understand that people once again want American made products.

The gap between overseas and domestic pricing on patio furniture has shrunk significantly and while American Made still means slightly higher prices, consumers are quickly realizing that the extra cost insures quality furnitureconsistent lead times, and efficient customer support when it comes to parts and damaged products. On a larger scale, this resurgence in buying American also benefits the country as a whole as increased demands for Made in the USA brings back manufacturing jobs that were lost during the great recession and helps the on-going recovery of a once shaky economy.

The Value of Quality

As costs overseas increase, cheaper materials are used making a great sacrifice to quality in order to turn out factory-line quantities. The Made in the USA label has become synonymous with high quality and is the #1 reason why many consumers have turned to American manufactured furniture once again. When the recession hit, shoppers had to become smarter with their money and cheaper was better in the short term, but it has since become more of a matter of asking, "will it last? Or will I find myself throwing it away next year?" The quality of Made in the United States of America outdoor furniture has become second to none in that regard, with many manufacturers touting complete lines that will start as a home owner's investment and transform into a family heirloom to be passed down throughout the generations.

American Made also comes with more favorable warranties than competing imports, with companies like Casual Comfort and Telescope Casual offering 15-year warranties and OW Lee offering an impressive, unparalleled 20-year warranty on all wrought iron and wrought aluminum frames. These manufacturers, along with many others, stand by their brand, the materials used, and the level of dedication shown by their employees which is a testament to the quality of their products as well as a major part of why such warranties are confidently offered.

Made To Order

The second major benefit to buying American outdoor furniture is the made to order promise. Many Made in the USA Manufacturers utilize JIT (Just In Time) manufacturing that allows for greater efficiency, improved quality, and faster turnaround times while not skimping on the consumer's ability to customize their furniture to best fit their personal or commercial patio space. With imports, lead times on furniture can often be all over the board due to over-production slowing down the line, and customization options are limited (if you want your furniture to arrive in a reasonable time frame.) With JIT manufacturing, only what is needed is made (hence made to order), which saves time and money for the manufacturer and ensures consistent lead times as the emphasis of JIT manufacturing is on getting it right the first time.

Made to order is especially important in today's age of online shopping where brick and mortar stores are no longer the only option for furniture shopping, and for many consumers they are no longer the preferred option. Online furniture shopping allows for quick "click of the button" customization that is convenient and efficient for consumers and the JIT method helps to keep up with orders, promoting versatile customization while still maintaining quicker shipping and lead times.

Support You Can Trust

With the rise in popularity of online furniture shopping, one concern that is still prevalent today is reliable customer support. With overseas manufacturing comes outsourced customer support which can result in slower response times to questions or concerns about damaged parts or a product that has not yet arrived. In several instances, the outsourced support does not even work directly for the manufacturer and only knows about the furniture in question from a manual or checklist in front of them. This can be a frustrating experience as it may take you 4 or 5 phone calls just to get a semblance of an answer you are looking for, yet still feeling like you have no idea where your furniture is coming from and when it will arrive. What Made in the USA means is customer service that is at most only a few hours away, and often directly employed by the company with personal experience regarding the furniture you are purchasing.

This personal, one on one experience ensures quick resolutions regarding damaged products as well as a guarantee that the customer service representative is there to utilize their extensive knowledge to best help you. You know who you are talking to, you know where they are located, and if something goes wrong, the Made in the USA promise is that it will get fixed in a satisfactory amount of time.

From well-packaged and protected shipments with less travel time to your home, to a loyalty and commitment to the country, there are many other reasons why buying American made outdoor furniture is a smart consumer decision. The benefits of domestic furniture manufacturing far outweigh those of imports, proving that the level of quality, service, and care is more than enough to make up for slightly higher price tags.

USA Outdoor Furniture is proud to be a part of this resurgence in American made products as a specialty retailer of outdoor furniture. By carrying only Made in the USA manufacturers, we are dedicated to helping our economy grow while also providing you with top tier service you can count on.

Having been in the outdoor furniture industry for more than 10 years, I have seen several different furniture lines bands and manufacturers that did not last in the outdoor furniture business.  A few things that have remained constant have been the top leaders of furniture that is made right here in the United States of America.

The four manufacturers listed have always been leaders in the outdoor industry all making several different lines and looks from modern contemporary to classic orientate. Whether using an outdoor room for dining, lounging, or both; people everywhere are embracing the idea that comfortable and well-appointed decks, patios, and other outdoor spaces effectively add square footage to your home while creating a relaxing atmosphere for years of enjoyment for the entire family. Because patio furniture is in such high demand, it is being produced all over the world which helps to bring a diversity of styles and trends to the marketplace. Although many manufacturers find overseas production to be more cost effective, there are a handful of companies making quality products here in the United States.

Labor costs are typically one of the driving factors that lead companies to ship jobs overseas, and while outsourcing can benefit the company’s bottom line, it can be detrimental to the local economy where they are relocating from. Telescope based out of Granville, NY, is a great example of how a small business can positively impact an area because they employ roughly half the town, making them an integral part of life in that community. Relocation of the manufacturing facility would surely devastate the local economy as well as uproot families, something that Telescope is firmly against. Having so much invested in the town as well as the company, it is no wonder why Telescope’s employees take such pride in their work and continually produce quality handmade patio furniture. Although the ‘Made in the USA’, slogan may sound like a simple marketing ploy to some people; manufacturing quality outdoor furniture is a way of life in Granville, NY.

While not every outdoor furniture manufacturer in the USA is so deeply connected to the community, there are some companies that refuse to open overseas manufacturing facilities for other, equally important reasons. OW Lee, a family owned company which produces wrought iron and cast aluminum outdoor furniture was founded in California in 1947. Through three generations, the Lee family has been producing casual patio furniture in America, and their products are widely considered the best on the market. Taking a different approach to the family business model, OW Lee requires that all family members interested in working for the company must first finish college and then spend at least 4 years working for a different company. Although this practice may seem strange to some, it is their way of ensuring a commitment to quality as well as the company’s core values. Today, the company, based in Ontario California, is dedicated to the same principles and techniques that have made OW Lee furniture an industry leader since 1947.

Homecrest Outdoor Living began in 1953 as the offspring of a retail furniture shop in Wadena, Minnesota where the original goal set out by founders Mert Bottemiller and Al Engelemann was to build a better ottoman for their vendors to supply. It was not long after that that the two expanded into creating indoor/outdoor patio furniture and in 1956 Bottemiller patented the original swivel rocker mechanism, which is still heavily utilized throughout Homecrest's now expansive catalog. Feeling a close connection to the North American consumer, Homecrest has remained fiercely dedicated to domestic manufacturing for over 60 years and has focused their efforts on the development of affordable luxury outdoor furniture that ranks high in both quality craftsmanship and comfort. Homecrest believes strongly in American made/made by Americans and is proud of their 130 employees who come from that very small rural community in Central Minnesota in which the company began, and while in the late 1990's competition from lower priced import products stirred up by the lifestyle of the Baby Boomer generation saw struggles and challenges for Homecrest, the company did not waver in their efforts to keep up with consumer demands

In the early 2000's Homecrest briefly attempted to outsource some of their product lines but the sacrifice of quality was a huge concern for the company and this "experiment" in off shoring was quickly abandoned. As a result of needing to be increasingly more competitive with cheaper overseas products, Homecrest upped its game and redefined its brand with new leaders and manufacturing strategies that focused on trend-driven design. Today, the company boasts nearly 30 American made collections that cater to the sophisticated consumer and feature timeless frame designs, beautiful fabrics, and a variety of frame finish color options that see a seamless flow between interior and exterior spaces.

Offering a variety of tables, chairs, sofas, chaises, loveseats, and ottomans as well as their signature Comfort Recliner and original Swivel Rocker, Homecrest is sure to have a look for any style of patio living area In addition to its selection of residential furniture, the company also caters to the hospitality industry with many of its collections featured across the nation at vacation resorts.

Celebrating 60 Years

Tropitone Furniture Co., Inc.

Tropitone makes casual furniture that is both beautiful and durable, much like the planet on which we live. As a corporate member of the communities in which we live and work, we embrace our responsibility to protect and improve the Earth.

One of our primary goals in designing and manufacturing our products is to support future generations by attaining sustainability through the preservation of natural resources. We continually strive to make products that use materials and processes that minimize negative environmental impact, conserve energy and natural resources, and improve safety for customers, communities and employees.

As part of our commitment to sustaining and improving the environment, Tropitone has nurtured a comprehensive Continuous Improvement culture. This enables us to look to the future through a green lens, and continually innovate solutions that are environmentally friendly. Here are some of the ways we are doing that today:

Aluminum Products

Tropitone uses recyclable aluminum in the manufacture of its products, recycling all scrap aluminum to keep cost low in the United states.

Packaging

We recycle all cardboard waste. In January 2011, Tropitone began using the EM6-50 Right-sized Packaging On-demand system to reduce waste and packaging-carton inventory while improving delivered product quality.

Incoming Packaging

We recycle steel crate frames, cardboard and paper used in the packaging of incoming parts and materials.

Woven Products

Tropitone uses Viro Fiber® on its fully woven product lines. Viro Fiber® is made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), the most common material used in recycling today. This age-defying, high-performance fiber is manufactured according to the highest quality standards and is UV-, weather- and pest-resistant.

Viro Fiber® is completely non-toxic and uses NO PVC; it is 100% recyclable and can be used again and again to safely make a multitude of new products. Viro Fiber® is beautiful and durable, the most responsible choice in all-weather, environmentally friendly fiber. The combination of aluminum frames and Viro Fiber® makes Tropitone's fully woven products 100% recyclable.

Fabrics

To reduce waste when cutting fabrics, Tropitone uses a Pathfinder K5180 CNC cutting machine. All our fabric suppliers have implemented "Green" programs; these range from the use of new, environmentally friendly materials to improvements in manufacturing and recycling processes.

Powder Coatings

Our powder-coating process is VOC-free during manufacture and during the life of the product. Also, our preparation process is monitored throughout each day and complies with all AQMD and EPA standards.

Looking ahead, Tropitone will continue to map opportunities to adopt "Green" practices and technologies. Through our Continuous Improvement culture, we are committed to implement bold sustainability solutions to improve our business processes and better serve our customers, our communities and, ultimately, our planet.

Although there are people that do not care where their patio furniture is made, many people find a certain level of satisfaction in supporting American companies. In addition to industry leaders like OW Lee, and Telescope, Homecrest and Tropitone there are a few more out there but these four are the clear leaders when it comes to outdoor furniture made in the United States of America.

Being a leader in the industry, these four manufacturers must stay on their game and continue to evolve to stay one-step ahead of the competition.

There are benefits to buying furniture that is manufactured in the United States of America, many times parts are easier to find if needed.  All American manufacturers stand behind their products, meaning if there is a problem, often they are more than willing to fix the problem and move forward, with continued customer service practices.

With the current COVID 19 issues, many more people maybe more inclined to want to only purchase American made products.  With manufacturing slowed to a standstill, and shipping and tariffs taking hold of the shipping and metals industries buying overseas product could issue buyers a few issues with time restraints with special orders and the ordering of parts and such.

Since the begging of the year we at Yard Art Patio & Fireplace have seen a delay of approximately 30% of all special orders being shipped from China.  This is not good for those manufacturers making furniture in other countries, but seems to be a good outcome for those based here in the United States, as they are able to facilitate orders in a timely fashion assuring us delivery date and quality products for our customers.

Not only is the purchase of the furniture a huge benefit to the consumer but these things always benefit more than just the consumer here are the biggest benefits to buying American made furniture:

American Jobs

Helping fellow Americans is as easy as buying American-made products and fully supporting these manufacturers. In fact, an American manufacturer recently announced an expansion and a move to a new factory in Tennessee where 200 new jobs are being created.

Environmentally Friendly

The amount of gas and diesel burned to ship furniture from overseas is staggering–and it will take more gasoline yet to get that furniture into your home. Less smog in the air is a win for everyone especially mother earth!

Fast Manufacturing

Most American made Furniture has been known for their expedient manufacturing processes since the 1960’s. In six weeks or less, on most special orders that is from design, fabric choices, to construction to packing and shipping orders out the door, to the Yard Art Patio & Fireplace warehouse so you can have your customized piece delivered to your home quickly!

So if you are interested in learning more about American made furniture or just want to browse our collections, come in to any of our local showrooms and let us help you here at Yard Art Patio & Fireplace.
